Whatever the project you're working on, you'll need several coats of epoxy resin and hardener. Most projects need between two and four. However many coats you're planning on, you need to recoat at the right time and in the right way and ensure your surface is properly prepared.


Is one layer of epoxy enough for a tumbler?


An average-size tumbler takes 1/2 ounce of resin to cover it with a light coat. But you might want to mix more and have a couple of different projects ready to go just in case you have leftover resin.


How many coats of epoxy can you use?

Apply a minimum of two coats of WEST SYSTEM epoxy for an effective moisture barrier. Apply three coats if sanding is to be done. Moisture protection will increase with additional coats, up to six coats or about a 20-mil thickness. Additives or pigments should not be added to the first coat.


Is epoxy 100% waterproof? Once it has finished bonding and curing, epoxy will prevent permeation by nearly any liquid or solid material, including water and humid air. Because of this feature, epoxy is frequently used in garage flooring, on shower walls, and as a coating for outdoor table tops.

Does rain effect epoxy? Once tack free, good industrial epoxy products are not affected by rain or snow. However, the time required to reach tack form differs for each product (from 30 minutes to 4 hours or more).

What happens if you pour epoxy too thick?

If your epoxy pour is too thick, the reaction can create too much heat, resulting in a product that does not cure properly with cracks or excessive bubbles. You can pour the next layer after the previous pour has gone through its heat cycle, which is usually around 24 hours.


What can damage epoxy? Clean up spilled gas immediately, because it will damage the surface of an epoxy floor if allowed to sit for too long. Paint, household cleaners and other abrasive liquids need to be cleaned up immediately. One coat of epoxy
